Policing, firefighting, and crisis healthcare have deep roots in our communities and in humanity. How was our current continuum of services developed?

The roots of our first responder programs

Local policing

Policing has its roots in the "night watchmen" from civilizations past, and modern policing began in the 1600s as cities grew and modernized, and realized the need for communal security. The first publicly funded local police force was developed in Boston in the 1830s (read more). The Cleveland Division of Police was founded in 1866 (read more).

Firefighting

The need to fight fires quickly and methodically has existed as long as humans have put down roots. Even the Jamestown settlement burned down once and had to be rebuilt in 1608; the first fully paid fire department was founded in Cincinnati more than 200 years later (read more). The first firefighting company in Cleveland was founded in 1829 (read more).
